8: Look on Sacred Peaks, Du Fu

Now how about Old Daizong

Qi and Lu are yet green here

Great Transformations cherish his aspect

His Yin and Yang cut morning from evening

The hot springs in his breast birth strata of cloud

His hard glare receives returning birds

Gathering facing his final peak

Many mountains are made small below

It's been a very long time! But we never forgot our lovely blog, only put it off. And now, to inaugurate a (may it be long!) new era of amateur Tang poetry translation, we have another Du Fu, this one also a cherished classic. More to come!

望岳

岱宗(1)夫如何,齐鲁(2)青未了。

造化(3)钟神秀,阴阳(4)割昏晓。

汤胸生层云,决眦入归鸟,

会当凌绝顶,一览众山小。

Wàng yuè

Dàizōng fū rúhé, Qí Lǔ qīng wèiliǎo.

Zàohuà zhōng shénxiù, yīnyáng gē hūnxiǎo.

Tāng xiōng shēng céngyún, juézì rù guī niǎo,

huì dāng líng juédǐng, yīlǎn zhòng shān xiǎo.
